I thought I’d try something new for the New Year. (Look, it got away on me, alright?!) A few artists I follow have branched out with fresh ideas, so I thought I’d try the same. Welcome to my first Vlog post with writing ideas, as promised, for reaching out to those in our communities currently locked down in aged-care facilities. Enjoy. And don’t forget to share your own ideas in the comments below.

Well done on your first vlog, Del! We like to stay in touch with the children we sponsor through Compassion by writing letters online (can also upload photos and scanned drawings). This will definitely be a project for our family during these weeks at home.
Great to see you here, Sandy! Now that’s something I hadn’t thought of. Clever. I guess that’s where Google docs or databases like Dropbox (I guess it’s a database?!) might also come into their own. It would be nice if there were IT assistants in aged-care facilities to help tech-up the adventurous residents who’ve not yet tried connecting that way. I’m sure once they start, they’ll be hooked! (Although I am convinced there is something special about a physical letter.) Take care!
Congratulations on your first vlog post Adele. Some good ideas there. Good old-fashioned letter writing might become popular again.
I volunteer with the Pyjama Foundation and usually meet with a foster child once a week to read and do learning activities. Like most things, home visits have been cancelled for the time being. However, we were encouraged to keep in touch with our child. So this week I bought two copies of National Geographic Kids magazine (she’s 12 and loves animals). I posted one to her and then we did a Skype session a couple of days later and read a couple of the articles together and did some of the activities. I never would have thought of doing that before this latest crisis, but it worked really well. It might be something that we keep doing from time to time even when this is all over.
We might have to do things differently for a while, but it’s a great time to be creative. Thanks for sharing.
What a fantastic idea, Nola. It would be great to be able to utilise the perks of modern technology more readily for those currently locked down in aged-care facilities. But as you say, in the meantime letters might just make a big comeback. It’s a really difficult time and likely a lonely time for many people. Admire your creative solutions in staying connected.
